What is Bikes in Schools?
Bikes in Schools was created to simplify what can be an overwhelming process by offering a full project management and construction service to schools across Australia.
Guiding you through the steps to implementing a complete biking program including bike track design and construction, a fleet of bikes, helmets and bike storage solutions.
With a background in track building across Australia, we are fully equipped with the skills and knowledge to successfully complete every aspect of your project.
Inactivity has skyrocketed over the past 40 years. In the 1970s, 80% of children walked or rode their bikes to school - only 20% do this today. We believe our mission can reverse the nationwide trend of inactivity and inspire a fitter, healthier and more engaged generation.

Why Bikes in Schools?
According to Mission Australia’s annual youth survey, the number of young people who identified mental health as a national concern has more than doubled since 2015. In terms of personal issues, nearly half of those surveyed were worried about their stress levels, while more than a third had school or study problems.
Biking in its most basic form is exercise. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins - the feel good hormones that lift mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Riding bikes from a young age in a safe environment raises fitness, confidence and self-esteem through a fun outdoor activity. Our “Bikes in Schools” program aims to create a habit of using a bike as basic transportation. Our goal is to give all kids the opportunity to learn to ride safely and develop their skills.
We believe that the simple act of riding a bike can lead anybody down the path of much greater things. It is our mission to bring together communities of riders that will share our passion for bikes, trails and leave a positive impact on the next generation.
What type of track can I build?
This is where the fun begins! Choosing a location is the first step. Our team will analyse the proposed site to determine the best design options. Most schools try to utilise ‘dead space’ in their grounds - either a lap around the outside of the school oval or an unused garden expanse that can be transformed into a landscaped usable bike space. Once the location is decided, we can help you make an informed decision on the style of track, whether it is a one-way loop, skills park area, pump track or traffic learning facility.
MTB Trails
Safe, accessible and exciting. Mountain bike trails encourage students to explore the great outdoors and stay active on two wheels.
Pump Tracks
Pump tracks are designed to help improve bike handling, balance, and flow while providing a fun and dynamic riding experience.
Skills Parks
Skills parks are a designated area with features like berms, jumps, rock gardens and bridges designed to develop and refine technical skills.
Traffic Learning
A Structured environment designed to teach children essential road safety skills, traffic rules, and bike handling.
Track Surfacing Options
There is 3 different ways to surface a track.
Dirt - Using the natural ground
Gravel - Importing a clay/gravel mix
Asphalt - Do it once, zero maintenance.
While most riding tracks have been built from decomposed granite/gravel mix or similar, some schools have recently used asphalt or hot mix riding tracks. While asphalt tracks usually cost more, they require much less maintenance, can be used by scooters, and are an excellent all-weather option. Each surface has it's benefits depending on the specific project, our team will help guide your decision throughout the planning process.
Who looks after the bikes?
We believe connecting schools with a local bike shop is best for the community and local economy. We will help facilitate the initial purchase and help setup a regular maintenance schedule.
What are the Impacts?
Regular access to and riding a bike goes from approximately 30% of the students to 100% of the students. This impact is both immediate and measurable.
Feedback from Principals, teachers, parents, cycle skills providers and students continually states that it;
- Raises the confidence, self-esteem and resilience of pupils through a fun activity
- Delivers health and wellbeing outcomes for the pupils (and staff)
- Provides an opportunity to self-manage risks within a safe environment
- Instils the habit of using a bike for basic transportation
- Results in the children and extended family biking more often
- Pupils gain knowledge, skills and confidence to ride safely for when they might ride outside of school
